The beginning of February always marks a special time of the year for your boys, and I don’t just mean because February 1 is the birthday of three musical legends: Rick James, Big Boi, and Harry Styles from One Direction.
Today is something much more important. It’s the beginning of what we at Houndstooth Heroes are unofficially calling: Hopslam Season.
The Kalamazoo, Mich.-based brewery produces some of our favorite adult brews, including the divine Two Hearted Ale, Oberon and a Kalamazoo Stout that will make you consider a new breakfast routine. Those are all year-round beers we highly recommend.
The crown jewel of Bell’s, however, is the seasonal Hopslam Ale, only available in the South for a tiny window of time — sometimes less than a month. Luckily, this year, that window falls in line with the Super Bowl. Since planning ahead is something we do so well, it’s often a good idea to call in your Hopslam order to your liquor/beer store beforehand. If they don’t carry Hopslam, find a new liquor/beer store.
So, what makes Hopslam so special? If this official Bell’s description doesn’t make you salivate, you ain’t got a pulse:
Starting with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle & culminating with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops, Bell’s Hopslam Ale possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell’s repertoire. Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit, and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double India Pale Ale style.
On top of that deliciousness, Hopslam also weighs in at a hefty 10.0% ABV. As the responsible heroes we are, we recommend no more than a billion in one sitting. After all, you’re going to need it to get through the Cam v. Peyton national lovefest we’re about to witness.
